AI explained

Start here to explore the basics of artificial intelligence (AI), learn what makes generative AI unique and understand how machines are trained to think and learn like humans.

What is artificial intelligence (AI)?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is integrated into our everyday lives as seen through technologies including phone voice assistants like Siri and content recommendation systems found through digital platforms like YouTube. So, what exactly is AI? Generally, AI technology involves computer systems performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This includes things like learning from data, recognising patterns, making decisions, and even solving problems. We rely upon AI technology to perform our daily tasks, which automate routine processes, helping us achieve efficiency and convenience.

What is generative AI (GenAI)?

So now we understand what AI is, but what is Generative AI or GenAI? Unlike general AI technology that retrieves or classifies existing data, GenAI is a subset of AI that can create new information such as text, images, computer code and even video. GenAI tools use Large Language Models (LLMs), which are trained on huge collections of data. Using natural language processing (NLP), these models predict what words are likely to come next in a sentence based on the language patterns they have learned, enabling them to generate structured responses to our questions.
