Course resources with Leganto

Add resources

On this page, learn how to add library resources and web sources, request digitisations, and request new materials for your lists.

Add Library resources

To add a resource to your list from the Library’s collection:

Keep your search simple – search by title and/or author last name.

To specify which section or chapter students need to read – open the item record and put that information in the Public note.

  1. In your list, click the + Add button Add icon at the top of the list and select Search the library.
  2. Once found, click the plus sign Add item to list (plus sign).
  3. Select the section you want to add the resource to, then click Add
Tip note

Some of our resources can’t be found this way. When a search of the Library's collection doesn't yield results, follow instructions in the Add web sources section.

Add web resources

Save resources from the web directly to Leganto with a browser tool called Cite it! These web sources could be openly available articles, videos or websites, but also books, chapters or articles that UNSW Library does not subscribe to or hold, but you would like us to purchase.

To add Cite it! to your browser, follow these steps:

  1. While in Leganto, open the Settings menu cog icon in the top-right corner.
  2. Select Cite it! – a pop-up message will appear.
  3. Drag the Cite it! button from the message to the bookmarks bar in your browser (you might need to make your bookmarks bar visible in the browser window first).

Now, whenever you’re on a web page that you want to add to Leganto, click the Cite it! button on your toolbar to prompt a pop up. You can save the web page as is, or to have your students read part of the web page/chapter from a book/section from a video etc., provide the details in the Public note.

The Library team will review the record and update the bibliographic information if necessary.

Tip note

If you added Cite It! to your browser before 2025, follow the steps above to add the new version.

Request digitisation

The Library can digitise a portion of text in print-only items, in accordance with Australian copyright laws.

To request a digitisation:

  1. In your Leganto list, select the item.
  2. In the Public note field, write a message addressing your students, for example: 'Read chapter xyz' or 'Read pages 25-36'.
  3. The note saves automatically.

The Library will be notified of the note and will assess the copyright restrictions for that item.

Once the digitisation is complete, a download button will appear in the item record.

Extra information note

Australian Copyright

For print books, one chapter or 10% of the total number of pages, whichever is greater, can be digitised.

For journal articles in a journal issue, only one article can be used, unless they relate to the same subject.

For more information, see UNSW Library Copyright for teaching.

Best practice

  • Keep your list to a reasonable number of resources.
  • Use tags to signal the importance of each reading your students. Learn how on Edit your list – Use tags.
  • View the analytics available in Leganto and consider removing resources where engagement has been low, or, add a Public note to encourage students to use them.
  • Let the Library know well in advance when new or updated resources are required so we can work together to ensure they are available for your students before the start of term.

Barrier-free access to knowledge

Teaching academics and the Library have a joint responsibility to ensure course resources are readily available to our students.

The Library will always try to obtain an electronic version of a resource, however, many publishers market titles primarily for individual sale rather than institutional sale. If an electronic version is not available, print will be obtained instead.

See UNSW Library Course Resources Guidelines for more detail, or contact your Outreach Librarian.
