Research metrics

Metrics are important to understand and use correctly for grant and promotion applications.

Refer to Measurement Tools for further information on how to find and use metrics.

Need help with metrics?

The Metrics Toolkit can help you understand each research metric across disciplines, including:

  • how the metric is calculated
  • where to find it
  • whether it's appropriate for you

Look up specific metrics using the sidebar.

Policy Documents

UNSW Staff have access to the following tools to explore citations in policy documents:

  • Dimensions - Users can explore and export over 2 million documents sourced from governments, nonprofits and research institutes. For data about UNSW publications cited in policy, please submit a data request to the Library.
  • Scopus - Users can view policy citations for individual publications, sourced from Overton. Simply scroll down to the "Metrics" section and view the details from PlumX.
  • Policy mentions can also be found by clicking the Altmetric badge on the ROS record for a publication.

Be mindful when using policy citations:

  • Not all documents available through Overton, Dimensions and Scopus are "policies" - each platform uses a broad definition of policy documents and includes various reports, summaries and working papers in addition to policies.
  • Overton advises caution in using policy citations for rankings, benchmarking and performance metrics.

More information about policy documents can be found in the Grey Literature subject guide.
