NB: Nature Communications is not part of this agreement (gold OA journal). Nature Reviews Journals are also not a part of this agreement, as they consist of publishing reviews and commentary articles rather than original research (in the clinical, life, physical, social and earth sciences).

Author eligibility: Is in line with licence terms - all current UNSW researchers including HDR candidates. Affiliation is strictly matched on first corresponding author.

Information for authors: For articles to be published open access under the terms of this agreement, corresponding authors must: select a participating institution as their affiliation in the publisher system and use an institutional email address for a participating institution (see Participating institutions list above) when submitting their article.

Corresponding authors should not use personal email addresses (e.g. Hotmail, Gmail). Doing so may result in delayed approval of the article or the article may not be approved to be published open access under the terms of the agreement. Corresponding authors may publish immediately to open access on the publisher's platform once the article has been accepted, with no transactional APCs. Further information is available for authors, see FAQ's Nature Open Access AgreementFor journal response times between submission and acceptance you should check the specific journal guidelines for accurate information.

Eligible article types: Open access publishing covered under this Read & Publish agreement is for original research papers, generally presenting new results. Articles published under this article type comprise the following Original Research article types: Analysis, Article, Letter, Brief Communication, Registered Report, Resource, Technical Report.

Authors who wish to make excluded article types openly available may choose to: Publish “closed access” and deposit the Author’s Accepted Manuscript in UNSW's institutional repository – view the publisher’s policies for information on embargoes or pay an APC (if applicable) to publish the article open access.

Acceptance date: 1 January 2024 to 31 December 2024.

Number of included articles: This agreement provides for an allowance of 25 articles, which is a collective pool for all 3 participating institutions (Including UNSW). Once the allowance is used, authors of any additional articles accepted in 2024 may choose to publish articles as "closed access" or to pay an APC for the article to be published open access.

Sharing via repositories: Inter-library loan is not permitted. Sharing is only permitted for the purpose of non-commercial single educational use, and must be deleted after printing.

How to submit your article for open access publishing:

  1. The UNSW corresponding author should follow the usual article submission process via Nature Open Access Agreement.

  2. On acceptance of the article, the publisher will ask the corresponding author to complete a form (publishing agreement).

  3. On acceptance of the manuscript, the payment system will allow UNSW corresponding authors to choose UNSW as their institution and remove the open access fee. Articles from authors at participating institutions will be published under a CC BY licence.

  4. To comply with the Open Access policy the UNSW corresponding author will need to retain the rights to either the Published Version of Record or Author Accepted Manuscript, and deposit into UNSWorks using a CC BY licence.

Corresponding authors should not use personal email addresses (e.g. Hotmail, Gmail) or email addresses affiliated with other organisations, research centres or institutes. Otherwise they may be ineligible under the terms of this agreement.
