NB: Nature Communications is not part of this agreement (gold OA journal). Nature Reviews Journals are also not a part of this agreement, as they consist of publishing reviews and commentary articles rather than original research (in the clinical, life, physical, social and earth sciences).

Information for authors: This agreement includes all current UNSW researchers including HDR candidates and must use their UNSW institutional email address (name@unsw.edu.au) to be eligible. Affiliation is strictly matched on first corresponding author. It is the author's responsibility to provide ORCID details to the Publisher.

Corresponding authors should not use personal email addresses (e.g. Hotmail, Gmail). Doing so may result in delayed approval of the article or the article may not be approved to be published open access under the terms of the agreement. Corresponding authors may publish immediately to open access on the publisher's platform once the article has been accepted, with no transactional APCs. For journal response times between submission and acceptance you should check the specific journal guidelines for accurate information.
Authors who wish to make excluded article types openly available may choose to: Publish “closed access” and deposit the Author’s Accepted Manuscript in UNSW's institutional repository – view the Publisher’s policies for information on embargoes or pay an APC (if applicable) to publish the article open access.

Eligible article types: Original research papers, generally presenting new results. Articles published under this article type comprise the following Original Research article types: Analysis, Article, Letter, Brief Communication, Registered Report, Resource, Technical Report.

Number of included articles: This agreement provides for a Joint Article Base for all participating institutions (Including UNSW). Once the Joint Article Base cap is reached, authors of any additional articles accepted in 2025 may choose to publish articles as "closed access" or to pay an APC for the article to be published open access.

Sharing via repositories: Please note UNSW corresponding authors can comply with the Open Access policy by retaining the rights to the Author Accepted Manuscript and depositing a copy into UNSWorks (via ROS) using a CC BY licence.

How to submit your article for open access publishing:

  1. The UNSW corresponding author should follow the article submission process via Nature Open Access Agreement.

  2. The submitted article will go through thorough peer review.

  3. If the article is accepted, the Publisher will ask the corresponding author to complete a form (publishing agreement).

  4. On acceptance of the manuscript, the payment system will allow UNSW corresponding authors to choose UNSW as their institution and remove the open access fee. Articles from authors at participating institutions will be published under a CC BY licence.

  5. To comply with the Open Access policy the UNSW corresponding author will need to retain the rights to either the Published Version of Record or Author Accepted Manuscript, and deposit into UNSWorks using a CC BY licence.
